Barbara D. Craig Receives Northwest Hydroelectric Association ‘Pamela E. Klatt’ Award

Press Release

PORTLAND, Ore.—Stoel Rives is pleased to announce that environmental senior counsel Barbara D. Craig has received the Northwest Hydroelectric Association’s (NWHA) Pamela E. Klatt Annual Award, which is given to an individual who has made lasting contributions to the Northwest hydroelectric industry through leadership and service. Craig was honored during the NWHA’s recent annual conference.

Craig, who practices in Stoel Rives’ Environment, Land Use & Natural Resources group, is a former forester who brings an understanding of science, biology, and public policy to her legal counsel that provides for crafting creative solutions to conflicts related to federal permitting. Craig’s clients have included developers and owners of hydropower dams, forestry companies and associations, ports, pulp and paper interests, wind energy and solar project owners, and utilities.

One of the Pacific Northwest’s first Endangered Species Act (ESA) lawyers, Craig’s experience on precedential spotted owl issues on behalf of the timber industry allowed her to expertly advise her hydropower clients as salmon and steelhead ESA listings proliferated along the West Coast throughout the 1990s and 2000s.

Craig has been listed in Chambers’ “America’s Leading Lawyers for Business” since 2010 and in The Best Lawyers in America® since 2009. Best Lawyers® named her its Natural Resources Law “Lawyer of the Year” in Portland for 2011, 2017 and 2019.

Established in 2009 by the NWHA Board of Directors, the award honors the memory of Pamela E. Klatt, who served the hydropower industry for more than 25 years variously as an environmental planner, NWHA Board member, and strategic advisor to licensees and Federal Energy Regulatory Commission staff.
